Giving up a career as an actor, Cătălin Păduraru thought he could gain movie-star status by selling wine. “I started my own wine business hoping to become as popular as I could have been  as an actor, but this is obviously much more difficult”, he said.

Păduraru graduated from the Academy of Theater and Film(ATF) in 1994. His older brother, Adrian Păduraru had the leading role in “Declaration of love”, a well-known Romanian film for the 80s highschool generation. Cătălin himself played in “High School Students” and “Rock’n'Roll High School Students” that followed up the success of his brother’s movie.

He realized however that shooting films in Romania would be harder and harder because of the lack of money, so he decided to start Prier, “Wine was not something new for me because my father was a wine producer”, said Păduraru. But first, his career transition included a two-year interlude in a tourist club set up by him and his brother Adrian in 1992, which later became a special club for ATF students.

There, Păduraru had his first contact with the wine business, “I gained a lot of experience which I then brought to my wine company”, he recalled. The first transport for wine distribution took place just before his graduation and he stored all the wine in a basement of the ATF building. His friends helped him unload the truck only after he promised a small drinking party for them, “It was the fastest unloading ever”, remembers Păduraru.

As the business developed he became well  known on the wine distribution market. “We were lucky because the leaders of the wine market at that time did not take us seriously and this gave us time to develop and become number one in high quality wine distribution”, said Cătălin.

Now Prier has two subsidiaries: Vinexpert, which has four employees and deals with a wine gallery and organization of wine tastings or other events where wine must be present, and Master Grafic Media, with 18- strong staff, which handles their public image.

According to Păduraru, Prier reports a turnover of almost 500.000 USD monthly. “Last year was the worst in our existence. In the middle of the year, the company reported losses of some thousands of dollars because of some changes in the legislation, but we managed to rebalance the company by year – end.”

Păduraru is most proud of penetrating inaccessible markets such as France and California, where he has exported Romanian wine. He is also an importer of French wine from Bordeaux and the Loire Valley. Prier’s main supplier is Vinia Iaşi but he also works with Cotnari and Dealu Mare. Among his clients are Athenee Palace Hilton, Otopeni Airport, all Bucharest Casinos, and the local Mega Image, La Fourmi, Billa and Gima.

One of the Păduraru’s most important goals is to become involved in wine production, to have his own vineyard and his own registered trademarks because, according to him, “Romania is among the top ten wine producers in the world and we learn to take advantage of this.”
